Puppets & Puppets SS 23 – New York Fashion Week
This season Puppets and Puppets designer, Carly Mark was inspired by Stanley Kubrick‘s Eyes Wide Shut (interesting fact, that this was one of the inspirations of the latest Gucci campaigns – named – Exquisite), the illustrations of Dante’s Inferno by Gustave Doré, and parties in New York City. By weaving together these three themes Mark was able to tell a story about New York that is universal and also uniquely her own. Resin chocolate chip cookies, demons, bananas, and telephones are used on handbags to accent stretch lace, tropical wool, sequins, powermesh, and lamé. Mark designed this season for a sophisticated and sexy woman who isn’t afraid of a bit of dark humor. Classic court shoes made in contemporary leopard print velvet, cherry moiré, and iridescent lamé are styled with evening dresses, lingerie, classic suiting, and outerwear.
Accompanying the collection is a collaboration Mark did with Michael Stars, an iconic early 2000’s brand, redefined to fit within the wardrobe of the woman that loved the clothing as a teen. Recurring elements of surrealism and humor are, as always, the ethos of the brand. This season is seen through the lens of a confident and bold woman living and working in New York City. The collection was presented at the New York Fashion Week.
Puppets and Puppets is a means to merge fine art and fashion simultaneously. They explore classic storytelling, non-traditional styling, and sculptural construction through clothing, as well as utility, comfort, and mindfulness. The brand aims to employ a different kind of role than a traditional fashion line— one that is future thinking and unafraid.
The brands Ars Poetica:
“When selecting our materials we prefer new, as well as preloved, yarns with recycled and organic contents. Our wool comes from certified mills that meet the Responsible Wool Standard. Our cotton yarns are made with pre-consumer regenerated materials.
We aim to push our research and development even further— partner with mills that produce carbon-positive materials and establish circularity within our own supply chain.
We prioritize working with women-led businesses that fairly employ and promote artisans and craftswomen. We source our materials to geographically match our factories. So far, we have established these strong working relationships in Peru, Bolivia, and Italy.”
